To give Individuality to a building – Dekoboko Kyubu (Protruding and recessed Cubes)
The center serves as a child welfare facility with Outpatient and Counselling Departments and a hospital providing health care services. It has a branch school for special needs education for school-age children admitted to the center and a multipurpose hall available for use by the residents in the neighborhood. In the design concept of the new building, a key phrase, “Dekoboko (protrusion and recess)” is used to represent the individual differences in needs, standards of values and personalities of children and adults with disabilities. This concept is represented in the pavilion-style building (cube) layout and the interior design full of variety. Another characteristic of the building design is the layout of corridors providing access to various rooms. A radial corridor layout, instead of the conventional grid layout, is used for ease of the movement, better patient monitoring and creation of spaces for lively communication.
