Japan Committee for UNICEF Support Project for Reconstructing Nurseries and Kindergartens
Support provided by UNICEF has helped to reconstruct14 nurseries and kindergartens damaged or destroyed by the East Japan Great Earthquake. The Makisawa Kibo Nursery was designed as an L-shaped wooden flat building surrounded by an open yard intended to be a child-friendly space. Visual and touching contrivances were made in certain spaces, such as setting the windows at various heights, using natural wood materials for parts that children can touch with their hands, etc. The strong-looking pentagonal roof truss of the UNICEF Tower seems to embrace and watch over the growth of children. The Ishinomaki Municipal Inai Nursery and Kesennuma Mothers’ Home were also planned at the same time.
